Was incredibly lucky enough to get to have a look around a bear sanctuary in the jungle north of Hanoi today. I learned that, the simple rule is, if you’re allowed to even touch a wild animal, it isn’t a legitimate sanctuary. No reputable sanctuary allows any kind of direct interaction whatsoever. You can easily check if a sanctuary is legit by seeing if it’s accredited by the Global Association of Animal Sanctuaries. Search for GFAS. If it isn’t, and it probably won’t be (especially in Asia), just don’t go. End of. Additionally, I learned that a) bears actually genuinely love honey, and b) there is a job going to walk a sun bear around the jungle every day. I can only hope that one day I’ll care more about the planet than my incessant desire to see more of it. Because, make no mistake, through countless flights and reckless consumption, people like me are completely fucking it up. Royally.
